The Site Management Safety Training Scheme forms a component of the Construction Skills (CITB) Site Safety Plus group of courses which are highly regarded within the construction industry and recognised as being the highest standard of qualification for SMSTS Training.
The SMSTS training is a 5 day course aimed at site managers, agents and people who are responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling or administering groups of staff and workforce. It is appropriate for those wishing to formulate a more in depth legal, moral and social knowledge of their role and also teaches delegates how to direct on-site health and safety in line with up to date legislation.
Around ten thousand people attend the site management safety training scheme health and safety course each year. Construction professionals who wish to secure a site manager role in future, as well as existing site managers who would like to refresh and build upon their knowledge would be well suited to SMSTS training. Employers of construction workers have a responsibility to see that their staff are suitably trained in a variety of health and safety aspects. This is a legal requirement within the industry under the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2007. The SMSTS course meets this requirement entirely and will qualify individuals through the highest level of training there is.
Individuals will establish their health and safety skills throughout the course. At the close of the five day programme they will be fully conscious of and proficient in their ability to :
* Apply all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them during their work
* Apply new guidance and industry best practice
* Articulate their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment
* Manage health & safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions, and within the context of their management or supervisory role
* Gain understanding of their responsibility and accountability for others welfare and health and safety on site
* Recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical and productive
An end of course test must be sat and individuals will also be assessed through three core exercises before they can qualify for the SMSTS accreditation. Successful candidates will obtain a certificate of qualification from Construction Skills. This certificate is valid for a period of five years.
